30年近くUKのトップDJ／SOUND SYSTEMとして活躍してきたアバは、今も尚ルーツレゲエ界の最前線を進み続ける現役のレジェンドだ。
幼少の頃から、父親である AllanのSOUND SYSTEM のそばで育った彼は、当然の様にそのRoots&CultureのSOUND SYSTEMに卒倒していく。 その後『Jah Tubbys』のMCとして、HeavyなDUB PLATEに縦横無尽に絡み付く彼のConsciousなメッセージは多くのクラウドを引きつけて行く。’90年【THE LEICESTER CARNIVAL】で ABA SHANTI-I をスタートさせて以来、DJ Magazine “TOP 100 DJs” で世界ランキング１位に選ばれるなど、今までに数々のBEST DJ、BEST SOUND SYSTEM AWARDに輝く、紛れもなく世界有数のレジェンド！！
ロンドンのBRIXTON RECREATION CENTREからKING’S CROSSの The Scalaに場所を移し 行われているRoots Reggaeシーン最大のダンス、DUBの聖地【UNIVERSITY OF DUB】で毎月レジデンツサウンドを務め、そのダンスには諸外国より常に彼のプレイを求めて大勢のファンが押し寄せる。また 毎年夏にロンドンで行われ（２日間で約２００万人が訪れる）世界最大のウェストインディーズのカーニバル【NOTTINGHILL CARNIVAL】のオフィシャルサウンドシステムとして 空気からアスファルトまでも震わすプレイは夏のロンドンの風物詩とまでなっている。ABA SHANTI-I 待望の来日！！

Joseph Smith was born in Hackney, London, UK of Antiguan parents, who immigrated to the UK in the 1960s. He was first introduced to Roots Reggae music by his father Alan Smith, who himself ran a sound system called Count Alan in the 1960s.
Aba used to deejay ‘Jah Tubby’s’ sound system and at that time he was known as ‘Jasmine Joe’.
Those of you that were around the sound system scene in the eighties will remember the slightly extrovert mic man that ‘Jah Tubby’s’ had; that was Aba.
When Joe embraced the Rastafarian faith he adopted a new and more positive attitude and with his rediscovered faith, a new name.
That name was and is ‘Aba Shanti-I’,pronounced ABA SHANTI-EYE not ONE.
So you see the name ‘Aba Shanti-I’ is not just the name of the sound system, it is the name of the person that is playing the sound.
Over the last 27 years Aba has been playing his sound, and the music created by his brother Blood Shanti on that sound, in small and large halls throughout this country and in the process has developed a following covering the widest spectrum of Jah’s humanity.
Black/ White/ Asian /Young /The Not So Young /Rastafarians /Bald head /Dread.All races.
All creeds, All genders.
We don’t segregate, We integrate!
They come because an ‘Aba Shanti-I ‘ session is synonymous with a vibe, a feeling.
No one at an Aba session is made to feel strange. It is not about what you look like, it’s about who you are and what is in your heart!
People come to discard their worries and to lose themselves in the music and by doing so cast off the mental shackles from their mind and the yolk from around their shoulders, find themselves, be at peace and be free.
The vibe that Aba generates has brought him to the attention of the media on a worldwide basis and he has been the subject of numerous articles in domestic and foreign magazines.
Aba Shanti-I sound system plays music in the roots reggae and dub style. He cites, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Junior Delgado, Yabby You and Prince Lincoln as inspiration. The original tracks are usually supplemented by reverb, delays and effects to generate his distinctive sound.
Aba Shanti-I has produced and recorded with his brother and the band The Shanti-Ites, releasing records on their own Falasha imprint. Their first record, Tear Down Babylon was released in 1993
Aba Shanti-I currently has a studio in Hackney, London.
